The Gili Islands first became popular with backpackers visiting Bali during the 1970s and 1980s. The Gili Islands are still a popular destination for backpackers but since the 1980s they have started to attract a much wider group of travelers, and a Gili cat fast boat is the best way to get there. The Gili Islands newer luxurious options for accommodation are now attracting travelers of all types. If you thought that Bali offered a laid-back lifestyle, then you will be even more impressed by the Gili Islands. The Gili Islands offer the kind of unspoiled beauty that people imagine when they think of island paradises. In addition to the natural beauty of the Gili Islands there are plenty of things for travelers to do and to enjoy. The islands have a wide range of cafes, restaurants and bars available with some fantastic dining options. If you like relaxing with a cool drink at a beach side bar watching the world go by then you’ll love your time on the Gili sIslands. Restaurant on the islands offer a full range of Indonesian dishes, Western cuisine, and of course you’ll find fresh sea food is a specialty across the islands.
Adding extra appeal to islands for many is the fact that they do not have any cars or motorbikes. Imagine the beautiful landscapes of Bali beaches but without the disturbances of modern day transportation and you can start to picture just help calm and relaxing it is to be on the Gili Islands. The Gili aren’t just for relaxing however, you can also enjoy an excellent range of activities – particularly watersports. On the Gili Islands you’ll be able to enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and free diving. Other options include scenic walks, tranquil yoga sessions and wonderful boat trips.
Gili Trawangan is the biggest of the three Gili Islands, and you get straight there with a boat from Bali to Gili Trawangan. It has a permanent resident population of about 800 people. It was the first of the islands to become a serious tourist destination. As noted above backpackers were the first to discover the splendors of Gili Trawangan. Because of it’s popularity with backpackers it has gained a reputation as something of a party hotspot. The backpacker scene continues to thrive here and is great fun, and you’ll be sure to find a party every night of the week. As the numbers of visitors have increased, Gili Trawangan has matured as a destination, offering a much wider range of accommodation.
Things have really picked up in the last ten years or so with the introduction of a wide range of luxurious accommodation, drinking and eating options. This is the situation that we have today and there are an amazing array of travelers on the island, all having travelled on a fast boat Bali Gili. These days you can see millionaires mixing it up with 20-something backpackers. For visitors this has meant that you can enjoy the island exactly the way that you want to. If you want to stay in a luxurious villa and receive first class treatment, then you certainly can. If you’re travelling on a budget, then there are plenty of great options as well. If you are looking for accommodation, then you’ll want to head to the Eastern side of the island. This is because the side of the island is sheltered from the roughest seas of the Lombok Strait. This is where boats and ferries disembark, and also where the main village can be found. Using a footpath you can circumnavigate around the entire island – a great way to spend a day. There are all paths crisscrossing back and forth across the island. While lots of the cheapest accommodation is set a few streets back in the village, close to where the boats arrive, heading south from here there are a range of hotels, and the further north out of the village you head, the quieter things start to become, with a range cool bungalows and villas right on the beach front.
Getting around on the island is easy thanks to its small size and it it’s flat right the way around the outside – there’s just one hill in the middle of the island. Probably the easiest way to travel around is to rent one of the bicycles, which are readily and cheaply available. You can ride around the entire island in less than an hour. At some point however you may need to give up your bicycle and walk due to the fact that the track is very sandy. If you choose to explore the inner parts of the island you’ll get to see local homes as well as goats, chicken and cows. If you have larger bags and you’re staying further away from where you depart the Patagonia Xpress you will need to travel using a horse and cart also known as a cidoma. If you are taking a short trip then this will cost you about IDR 50,000, and is a fun way to get about.
There’s plenty to do on the island one of the most popular options is diving. On the island there numerous internationally recognized and approved diving centers with extremely professional operators and instructors, keen to share their love of the ocean with you. Thanks to the warm waters diving is a delightful experience on the island whether you are a seasoned pro or have never dived before. A great place to learn to dive, for more experienced divers there are still plenty of challenging dive sites. This means that if you are looking to extend your experience and qualifications the island is a fantastic place to do it.
You’ll also find yoga centers on the island and it’s a special place to practice this ancient art form. Enjoy your session in lush tropical surroundings to the relaxing sounds of the local wildlife. If you are keen to experience what’s going on under the sea, but diving isn’t your thing, you could try the clear bottom kayak and canoes, or even take a trip in a glass bottom boat. Enjoy views of the coral and marine life without getting wet.
Gili Air is the closest island to Lombok. It’s a fantastic option if you are looking for somewhere which is more relaxed and less party orientated than the larger Gili Trawangan. Although not the biggest island, Gili Air does have the largest permanent population with about 1800 people living on the island. The accommodation and most of the restaurants cafes and activity centres are located on East and south Coast facing towards Lombok, and the harbor is in the middle of the main village. There is a coastal path which leads around the circumference of the island. If you are walking slowly around the island you can expect to travel the entire circumference in about an hour and a half. Small and relaxed, Gili Air also has everything you’ll need as a tourist. If you are looking to do some shopping or dining in the local restaurant there is an ATM located about five minutes east of the ferry arrival terminal. There is also a second ATM which can be found a little further north past the Turtle Beach Hotel. If you need some of the basic necessities, there are shops by the boat disembarking point and also around east side of the island. You can also purchase local Lombok handicrafts from vendors around the island.
There are plenty of great places to eat as you walk northwards along the coast. When you are eating on the island, make sure you try some of the local delicious grilled fish which is freshly caught from the ocean surrounding the island. There are plenty of Western eating options available as well. Classico, which is on the East Coast is an Italian pizza restaurant. They have a selection of standard pizzas or you can choose to create your own from the options that are provided in front of you. While this is not the cheapest place to eat on the island it is one of the better quality options. Located on the north east coast is Alibaba. This quirky place is one of the best place for a meal on the island. You can choose from a local menu as well as wood fired pizzas. You’ll be able to enjoy your meal right on the beach. If you want to spend your days sipping on a coconut or cocktail under the sun, and have delicious food on call when you want it, consider paying a visit to Scallywags Beach Club. Located on the east side of the island, the white sand beach leads you straight into the warm turquoise calm waters to cool off. It’s also a good spot for some snorkeling too with lots of brightly coloured fish to be seen on the reef. If you are looking for a chilled out place to enjoy a drink and try Mowie’s bar located on the west coast; it’s a fantastic place to enjoy a wonderful Gili Air sunset.
If you are looking for a true desert island experience, then Gili Meno is a great option. Gili Meno is defintely the most relaxed and chilled of the Gili Islands. The island is especially popular with couples who are looking to get away from the crowds, enjoy some nature and a few nights of romance. There is a coastal path that leads all the way around the island – take a stroll around and you’ll realize what a small island you’re on. Even if you’re walking at an extremely relaxed pace you can probably make it your way around the island in about an hour and a half. Boats to the island arrive at harbor on the east coast, but harbor is perhaps overstating this small stretch of seafront with a few boats coming and going, it’s certainly no commercial port! This is also where the majority of the tourist facilities and accommodation can be found. If you travel to the western side of the island you’ll find a small saline lake, and a few isolated accommodation options.
Like all of the Gilis, Meno is a great place for Scuba Diving. Dive schools here include Blue Marlin, Divine Divers and Gili Meno Divers. Blue Marlin is a complete dive shop operator and offers a range of PADI courses as well as some fun Dives. Divine Divers is a smaller and more personalised dive school. You’ll find all of the PADI courses as well as a good range of fun Dives. They offer dive teaching in English, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch and French. At Gili Meno Divers you will find all PADI courses, and instructors speaking in English, French, German, Turkish and Spanish.
Despite its small size, there are still some good options for dining on Gili Meno. The go to dish is of course seafood. You will find that there are sea food barbeques set up in the many beach side cafes scattered across the island. You can choose your dish and then see it cooked right in front of you. The majority of the restaurants and cafes can be found in the south part of the island on the Eastern side.

Benoa Harbour is our first and last port destination for our daily fast boat transfer service. Bali’s main port is at the entrance of Teluk Benoa (Benoa Bay), the wide but shallow body east of the airport runway. Benoa Harbour is on the northern side of the bay – a square of docks and port buildings on reclaimed land. It is linked to mainland Bali by a 2km causeway which is now also part of the Bali Mandara Toll Rd. It’s referred to as Benoa port or Benoa Harbour to distinguish it from Benoa village, on the southern side of the bay.

Our trip with Patagonia to Benoa was perfect! Amazingly, the boat is arrived on time at 12:00pm at Gili T! And all went smoothly from loading our luggage to/from the boat. The journey was so pleasant even though we had a couple of stops in Padang Bai & Bangsal, we still arrived on time at 4:00 pm in Benoa. All the crews are very friendly and cheerful. Our trip with Patagonia was the best. We will recommend to our friends and family and we will definitely returning to sail with you again to Gilis!
