The Gili Islands became popular in the 70s and 80s. They have, since then, attracted a wider group of tourists besides backpackers who first discovered the beauty of the islands. A Gili fast boat is the best way to get to these sandy beaches. There are a variety of luxurious hotels to accommodate travelers during their stay. The beautiful and serene islands have a pure beauty and offer a laid back lifestyle for people who enjoy different activities.
Gili Trawangan is the biggest of the Gili Islands. It was also the first to be discovered as a tourist destination among these islands. The population of the permanent residents is around 800. The reputation of Gili Trawangan amongst backpackers makes it a party spot and you are assured there is a party on every night on the island. Over the years, Gili Trawangan has developed as a tourist destination increasing the number of luxurious hotel, cafes and restaurants.
There are no vehicles or motorcycles on the Island though it is easy to make your way through the island thanks to its fairly flat landscape. Many roads are crisscrossing along the island, and the easiest way to travel is using a bicycle. You can circulate the entire island in approximately one hour, but the sand would hinder smooth movement. The Eastern side of the Island is most preferred for accommodation because it is sheltered from the rough seas of the Lombok Strait. You can also travel around the island by horse and cart.
Gili Air is closest to Lombok and offers a more relaxed and tranquil environment. This is because it is less party oriented, unlike the bigger Trawangan. Due to this, Gili Air has the most significant permanent population of around 1800 people. If you are strolling, you can cover the circumference of this island in an hour and a half.
The most common activity performed by tourists is diving. The warm waters surrounding the islands offer a great diving experience whether you’re a pro or a beginner. The island has yoga centers where the sessions are more enjoyable because the tropical surrounding is filled with relaxing sounds of nature. Other activities include snorkeling, scenic walks, and boat trips.
While preparing to visit the island, you can pay for a one-way or a return ticket. Children under the age of three years travel free of charge and check the fees and schedule area of the website for our up to date fees and any specials that may be on offer.
