Discover the Gili Islands
Indonesia is famous for its cultural diversity and physically attractive landscapes. If you’re idea of paradise involves a quiet place with white beaches, beautiful sceneries, and friendly people, you should consider visiting the Gili Islands, which are just off the coast of Lombok.
The Gili Islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations for tourists looking for an isolated experience with a peaceful sense of getting away from it all. Gili, meaning small islands, is composed of three small islands that stretch as three dots from the mainland of Lombok. These are Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. Life on the islands is quite laid back, with most locals occupying Trawangan which is the furthest from the mainland. It is also known as a party island, and the name says it all. That says as well as the bars, there’s plenty of opportunity for relaxing and getting away from it all here too. Crystal clear waters filled with endless varieties of marine life surround the islands. The water is edged out by white sandy beaches that provide the best sunbathing spots during the day, and the best sunset spots during the evenings.
Gili Air was the first to have inhabitant settlement due to its proximity to the Lombok mainland. Gili Air is a laid back place, popular with families and divers, and holiday makers who really are looking for a relaxing topical island experience. Between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan lies the smallest of the three islands, Gili Meno. The atmosphere in Meno is very mellow, with just a few resorts, hotels and restaurants. Walking around the whole island will only take you about an hour.
All three of the islands and automobile-free so the only way to get around is by walking, riding a bicycle or by horse and cart. Gili Trawangan has a faster pace of development compared to Meno and Air. All in all, the Gili Islands have their own sense of allure and charisma. Accommodation varies, from back-packer one night rooms, bungalows, hotels, and villas. What ever your budget, you’ll find some charming accommodation that will form part of your many happy memories from the islands.
The best way to get to the Gili Islands from Bali is by fast boat, and small local boats may be used for trips between the islands. The temptation to swim across the islands may at times be quite high, but this should not be done – there are very strong currents in the channels between the islands.
Other than beach-related activities, the other thing which you could do is relaxing and enjoy the tropical setting. In the evenings, you’ll find charming restaurants and bars, and even open air cinemas where you can watch a film enjoying the balmy tropical nights. You’ll also find live music in many bars, just sit back and enjoy. Each of the Gili Islands has its own unique character but all offer you a true tropical island paradise that will stay in your memory for a lifetime.
