Gili Trawangan, aka Gili T, is the biggest and most commonly visited of the Gili Islands which lay off the coast of Lombok. This beautiful, gem of an island was an early Indonesian addition to the hippie backpacking trail. Over time it has become a well-developed tourist destination which welcomes everyone from luxury travelers to families to backpackers. While these days it is much more suited to the modern traveller it has lost none of its charm. The best way to visit Gili Trawangan is aboard the fast and comfortable Patagonia Xpress.
Gili Trawangan has a population of around 800 local residents. Of the three Gili Islands Gili Trawangan was the first to be discovered by backpackers in the 1970s. Thanks to its idyllic sandy beaches, laid-back lifestyle and cheap accommodation the island gained a reputation as party central in Indonesia. Even to this day Gili Trawangan is extremely popular with young people looking to have a good time.
Gili Trawangan is no longer just for partiers however. The development boom in the 1990s led to an expansion of the types of accommodation and activities that are available on the island. On the island you will now find hotels, luxurious bungalows, cottages and of course backpacker accommodation.
The appeal of Gili Trawangan over other places in Bali is probably owing to two main factors. The first of these is the fact that there are no vehicles on the island. Relaxing in the warm sun you won’t find your idyll disturbed by the sound of modern automobiles. The only way to navigate around the island is by foot, by bicycle or by horse and cart. This isn’t a problem however as it only takes about 2 hours to walk around the entire circumference of Gili Trawangan. Even if you’re walking around the inner parts of the island it is very difficult to get lost. Head towards the water and you will soon be back next to be coastal walkway. The other reason for Gili Trawangan being such a popular destination is thanks to it diving industry. The Gili Islands diving industry is centered on Gili Trawangan.
Most of the accommodation on Gili Trawangan can be found on the Eastern side of the island. This is also where you will find activities such as yoga and diving. The reason for this is that the Eastern side is more sheltered from the rough sea of the Lombok Strait. This is also where you will embark and disembark from the Patagonia Xpress. As noted above there is a footpath which runs around the entire Island. There are also other small path which criss crosses through the island. Most of the islanders on Gili Trawangan live in the area known as The Village. This is also where you’ll find a lot of the budget accommodation, with slightly more expensive options on the beach front, and away from the main village.
If you want to explore the island and you’re looking for something a little bit more quickly than travelling by foot, then you can hire a bicycle. All of the tracks around Gili Trawangan Island are suitable for riding a bicycle. Typically it costs about 60,000 RP per day to hire a bicycle. If you’re hiring a bicycle for a couple of hours then you can expect to pay about 25,000 RP. It will take you less than 2 hours to ride around the entire Island. At some point you may find that you need to get off from your bicycle due to the track becoming too sandy. Bicycles are a great way of exploring the inner part of the island. If you have heavier bags to take to your accommodation me and you should consider hiring a horse cart to get there. From the Patagonia Xpress for a short trip on the island you can expect to pay about 50,000 RP to reach your accommodation.
