The Gili Islands comprise of three ideal tropical islands. These are Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. They were so-called “Gili” because it means “Small Island” in the Sasak language – the Sasak are indigenous people of Lmobok. The islands have silvery sandy beaches backed by beautiful coconut palm vegetation. The key means of transport within the Gili Islands is bicycles, horse-drawn carts or foot. There are no motor-powered vehicles.
Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three islands. With one hill in the middle, it has an altitude of thirty meters above the sea level at it’s highest point. It is also the most developed in terms of infrastructure which is aimed at improving tourism. The majority of accommodation, amenities, bars, restaurants and diving Schools are located on the Eastern wing of the island. The islands main village is found directly behind the harbor area, and contains the islands mosque for the largely Muslim population. There are a variety of accommodation options for all budgets, ranging from homestays to luxury villas and a range of bars, restaurants and beach clubs.
Gili Air is the second largest Gili Island. Gili Air provides a magnificent snorkeling and scuba diving venue, mostly on the Eastern coast. One can see turtles and a variety of tropical marine life alongside the coral reefs. Gili Air is a popular destination for couples in search of a romantic break, or for those on their honeymoon because of its low key and laid back nature. It’ also a great island for families, or groups of friends looking to enjoy a tropical island experience – be that laying on the beach and enjoying a cocktail or heading off for some scuba diving to explore under the seas. Again, there are a variety of accommodation options to suit all budgets – simple homestays, hotels and villas. Accommodation is spread around the island, with the majority on the eastern and southern coasts, with some of the cheaper options being slightly inland in the main village. Smaller than Gili Trawangan, you can walk around the whole island in a couple of hours or less, and this is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon.
