What To Eat: Lombok Traditional Food Options

Some say that Lombok is just like Bali was 20 years ago, where most areas and beaches remain untouched and pristine. Lombok also has a really interesting culinary scene, so don’t just rely on burgers and pizzas while you’re there. Here are some of the top quality Lombok traditional food options on the islands:

Ayam Taliwang Lombok

Ayam Taliwang

Ayam Taliwang is one of the most popular Lombok traditional food. This dish is so popular that it has made its mark across the country. You can even find specialty restaurants selling the Ayam Taliwang in Bali! Fresh chicken marinated in special sauces, herbs and spices and then grilled over hot coals, gives you a succulent meal that is slightly crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth soft on the inside. The best Ayam Taliwang is made using free-range chicken or ayam kampungand served with rice, raw greens and a delicious dollop of sambal.

Bebalung Soup

A delicious soup, featuring a tantalizing mixture of herbs and spices like shallots, turmeric, ginger and chillies and the main ingredient, cow ribs. Sometimes this soup is even made using buffalo ribs! You can find this dish in Lombok and Bali as well. For an extremely satisfying meal, after a day of swimming and snorkeling, the soup is best consumed hot. Our new destination in Nusa Penida is another great spot for swimming, diving and of course delicious food!

Lombok Travel Tips : Do’s and Don’ts

Your adventure here in South East Asia wouldn’t be complete without visiting Lombok. While Lombok has it’s own charm and character when compared to Bali, remember to stay vigilant and stay safe.

Choose A Reputable Fast Boat Company

Fast boats are the fastest way to get to the Gilis. Just 90 minutes from Bali’s Padang Bai Harbour or over 2 hours from Benoa Harbour, and you’ll soon arrive at your destination. Choose a reputable and credible company for the sake of your safety, value for money and for peace of mind. Patagonia Xpress is Bali’s largest and most luxurious fleet of fast boats to and from Gili Islands, Bangsal, Lombok and Bali. Be sure to check out ticket prices and schedules at and don’t forget to check our new destination to Nusa Penida.

Be Mindful Of Your Things

If you disembark at Bangsal Harbour, don’t allow a stranger to handle your personal items, not even if they declare themselves a “porter”. They will charge you unreasonable amounts just to carry your bags for you. Authentic porters only charge Rp 2,000 per bag! If you’re not sure who the actual porters are, just play it safe and carry your own stuff. Remember to pack light.

Local Vendors

There are plenty of local vendors at Bangsal Harbour who will bombard you with the trinkets they’re selling. Their prices are most often shockingly high. Remember there are tons of other shops in Lombok and the Gilis that sell sundries and day-to-day items at a much better price. Children will also offer to wash sand off your feet; remember this is not free, they will ask you for money.

Lombok isn’t Bali and getting a Go-Jek or a Grab isn’t as easy as pushing a button. Don’t give in to the touts at the harbour, simply call the Lombok taxi service at 627000 and ask them to pick you up.

Despite it all, Lombok is a tropical paradise only 90 minutes away by fast boat from Bali. Book your trip with Patagonia Xpress, Bali’s largest and most luxurious fleet of fast boats to and from the Gili Islands to Bangsal, Lombok, and Bali. Check our new destination to Nusa Penida as well!

Malimbu Hill

Explore Lombok: Sunset at Malimbu Hill

While holidaying in Lombok, you’ll enjoy numerous wonderful sunset moments, but none will compare to the sunset you’ll witness while at Lombok’s Malimbu Hill. Located just 45km from Mataram town or 10 km from Senggigi, Malimbu Hill promises views unlike anywhere else on the island.

The name Malimbu Hill was derived from America’s famous “Malibu” beach but due to the local dialect, the hill eventually became known as Malimbu. It’s been said that sunset views at Malimbu Hill are epic. The spectacular panoramas are further intensified by two of the Gilis (Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno), as well as Bali’s majestic Mount Agung. Don’t forget to check our travel & money saver tips at The Gili Islands.

Malimbu Hill

Three beautiful icons against nature’s most breathtaking backdrop of God’s own canvas. In addition to sunsets, Malimbu Hill is a very popular destination for families, young adults and the motorbike and bicycle communities. On a clear day, the dazzling blue sky blends well with the blue of the ocean, the sparkling white sands and the lush greenery of the hills beyond, making Malimbu Hill a favourite destination for photographers.

To reach Malimbu Hill, you’ll need to drive for 45 minutes from Mataram. The road leading here is quite challenging. If you don’t know the way, ask a local or bring a local friend or guide with you. You’ll have to climb quite a number of steps to get to the top! At the top of the hill, there is a rest area on the hill’s east side that is roughly 150 metres long and 2 metres wide. For safety reasons, a strong guard rail has been installed against a 25 metre dramatic drop.

If you’re going up to the hill, be careful of your belongings though, as there are monkeys at the top of the hill waiting for snacks and treats. There are also small warungs or traditional stalls selling snacks, drinks and fresh coconuts. Remember, however, to take your trash with you and keep Malimbu Hill clean. If you’re planning to head towards the Gilis, you’ll definitely take the route that takes you pass Malimbu Hill, as it is located on the north end of the island. Check our schedule for more detail.

Kuta Bali

Kuta Bali VS. Kuta Lombok

Did you now that Lombok island has its very own version of Kuta? However, there are huge differences between the two Kutas, and in this article, we explain them.

Kuta Bali

Kuta Bali

This is where it all began for Bali. Surfers first found this stretch of beach back in the 70s and its popularity, along with development, grew rapidly. Mention Kuta, Bali to anyone now and the first thing they’ll say is “Oh, it’s so touristy!” Not to mention the perpetually chaotic traffic along the shopfronts and resorts, right opposite from Kuta beach. This 5km stretch of beach offers one of the very best sunset spots in South Bali.  Enjoy watching the sky turn a deep gold, pink and purple while you enjoy a cold beer or a coconut, on a beach chair or beanbag provided by one of the many vendors dotting the beach. While it’s constantly crowded and never quiet, it’s still a major attraction, especially for surfers and tourists. Kuta town is a major party destination; you’re sure to never run out of shops, restaurants, bars, clubs or spas to visit.

Kuta, Lombok

Kuta Lombok

Lombok’s Kuta beach is located in the South of Lombok. Those seeking clean, pristine and unspoiled beaches away from the crowds and noise will find what they’re looking for here. Kuta is a long stretch of white sandy beach fringed by palm trees overlooking the beautiful aqua water. There is hardly any development and noise. There are breathtaking views everywhere you look, and mornings are great for yoga and quiet meditation or just having a moment to yourself. Aside from a few fishermen boats out at sea, there won’t be much to disrupt your peace and serenity. At times, a few local ladies might approach you with their wares while you’re on the beach, but they aren’t persistent. These ladies are friendly and would be more than happy to sit and chat with you for a minute or two. In Kuta town itself, there are a few warungs and shops, but they are almost always empty. At night, you’ll find a pop-up bar on the beach to entertain tourists with a little music and some drinks.

pink sand beach lombok

Lombok’s Pink Sand Beach

Not unlike Bali and the Gili islands, Lombok has dreamy beaches that should be on every visitor’s to do list. One of them, in fact, presents a rare, naturally-occurring phenomenon you need to witness first hand at least once.

Tangsi Beach, more popularly known as Lombok’s Pink Sand Beach, can be found on the island’s far south-eastern shore. It is one of 10 of the world’s only pink sand beaches. Indonesia is blessed with two beautiful pink beaches – one in Lombok and the other on its neighboring island, Flores.

Mostly due to its secluded location, Tangsi Beach is a hidden gem still untouched by mass tourism. As part of a memorable day out, it’s the perfect destination for exploring Lombok’s unique natural beauty. Plus, the water conditions there are perfect for swimming.

pink sand beach lombok

Why is it pink?

The waves, along with millions of dead red coral fragments, blend with the beach’s white sand, giving it its beautiful pink hue.

Things to do at Pink Beach

Immerse in the raw beauty and the sea breeze under the sun or shade, while sipping fresh coconut water. The beachfront has simple sunbeds with shade umbrellas peppering the sandy stretch for all-day use at a small fee.

You’ll find vendors selling bottled water and cold beverages, but it’s recommended to always carry your own drinking water. Also, if you’re planning to laze around on the beach all day, remember to pack your sunscreen!

Cool off in the ocean. As mentioned before, you can play in the gentle waters of Pink Beach and it is safe for swimming.

Take a half-hour hike up the hillside to the shaded berugak (a traditional hut with roof and pillars), for a breathtaking vista from above the beach.

How to get to Pink Beach

Pink Beach is a 2-hour drive from Lombok’s central (Mataram city). Ideally, you’d want to get there by private car hire with a driver-guide. Alternatively, you can get there by hiring a fishing boat from Tanjung Luar Port. The journey via water takes around 3 hours but will have you witness the wonderful scenery of southern Lombok en route.

Other beaches

The best beaches, ideal for day trips, swimming and surfing, are mostly along the southern coastline of Lombok (near Pink Beach).  They are: Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun Beach
and Cemara Beach among others.

Lombok is accessible by an approximate 2-hour fast boat ride from Bali. Patagonia Xpress offers fast boat services from Bali to Lombok so you can witness one of the world’s Pink Beaches!
